PETG is an amorphous copolyester. With the increase of CHDM in the copolymer, the melting point decreases, the glass transition temperature increases, the crystallinity decreases, and finally an amorphous polymer is formed. Generally the content of CHDM in PETG is more suitable at 30%-40%. It has good adhesion, transparency, color, chemical resistance, and stress whitening resistance. Can be quickly thermoformed or extrusion blow molding. Viscosity is better than acrylic\(acrylic). Its products are highly transparent, excellent impact resistance, especially suitable for molding thick-walled transparent products, its processing and molding performance is excellent, according to the designer's intention to carry out the design of any shape, can be used in the traditional extrusion, injection molding, blow molding and blister molding and other molding methods, can be widely used in the market of plate and sheet, high-performance shrink film, bottles and profiles, etc., and at the same time, it has excellent secondary processing performance, and it can be used for conventional Machining modification.
01、Characteristics of PETG
PETG products with high transparency, good gloss, with a glassy texture, is a new transparent engineering plastics, with excellent impact strength, toughness, good heat resistance, good weather resistance, excellent chemical resistance, strong coloring power, easy to molding and processing, good hygiene (in line with the FDA) and other advantages, does not contain BPA, belongs to a new generation of environmentally friendly plastics.
Now, let's first recognize the four main grades of PETG: K2012, PN200, YF300, PN300 the main purpose of these four materials.
K2012 - temperature resistance can be up to 70-80 degrees (use: mainly used for household daily necessities, pharmaceutical containers)
PN200, PN300 -- mainly used for cosmetic packaging containers
YF300--Temperature-resistant to 100-110 degrees (Usage: mainly used for household goods)
02、Main applications of PETG
(1)Plate and sheet material
Using conventional molding methods, it can prepare 1~25.4mm thick transparent materials with outstanding toughness and high impact strength, its impact strength is 3~10 times that of modified polyacrylate type, excellent molding performance, cold bending without whitening, no cracks, easy to print and retouch, and is widely used in indoor and outdoor signage, storage racks, vending machine panels, furniture, construction and machinery baffles.
PETG materials are used in credit cards.Visa Inc. is one of the world's largest credit card companies, and in 1998 its global card issuance was 580 million. The company has endorsed diol-modified polyester (PETG) as its credit card material. PETG is an alternative to PVC for countries that require card materials to be more environmentally friendly. Visa also notes that results from three different pilot plants show that PETG meets all the requirements of the international standard for credit cards (150/IEC7810), so PETG cards are likely to be widely used here.
(2)Profiles
Can be molded tubes or various profiles, its products are hard, transparent, glossy, not white under pressure, easy to mold and post-processing treatment, in line with environmental protection requirements, while meeting the U.S. FDA standards on food contact, widely used in architectural decoration and materials.
Film: specifically applied to high-performance shrink film, there is greater than 70% shrinkage rate, can be made into complex shape container packaging, with high plastic absorption, high transparency, high gloss, low haze, easy to print, not easy to fall off, the advantages of low natural shrinkage when stored, applied to beverage bottles, food and chemical; mausoleum products shrink wrap and shrink labels for electronic products and so on. Among them, bi-directional stretch PETG film is suitable for high-grade packaging, printing, electronics and electrical appliances, cable wrapping, insulation materials and a variety of industrial areas of high quality substrate. Unidirectional stretch PET, heat shrinkable film is suitable for a variety of cans, polyester bottles, a variety of containers and other external labels. Compared with PVC shrink film, PETG shrink film also has the advantage of environmental protection.
Bottles: improve the traditional polyester beverage bottles with low toughness, especially suitable for the manufacture of large-capacity, thick-walled transparent containers, highly transparent, unbreakable, easy to surface modification, to meet the U.S. FDA standards on food contact, can be applied to food and medical products and other fields. In the beer plastic packaging, EASTMAN company for the Asahi company produced a new environmentally friendly plastic packaging beer bottles, Eastal copolyester film for sealing packaging materials, its shape for the silver
and black, supplemented by black holes in the neck with a black hole banded pull-ring closure, which can block the light, isolate the air, to ensure the quality of the beer, and with the rupture of the bottle to prevent debris from splintering explosion-proof features, shrinkage Excellent shrinkage performance. Since Asahi adopted this packaging material, sales of Super Dry and Dunk beers have increased dramatically.
(3) Cosmetic packaging
PETG has glass-like transparency and density close to glass, very good gloss, chemical resistance, impact resistance, and easy processing, can be injection molding, injection pull blow molding and extrusion blow molding. It is also capable of producing unique shapes, appearances and special effects, such as bright colors, frosting, marbling, metallic luster and so on. And it is also possible to use other polyesters, elastomers or ABS for overlapping injection molding.
Products include perfume bottles and caps, cosmetic bottles and caps, lipstick tubes, make-up cases, deodorant packaging, talcum powder bottles and eyeliner sets, etc. PETG injection molded products include medical devices such as filters, eustachian tubes, tube connectors, pumps, clips, and dialysis equipment. Household utensils such as cups, salad bowls, salt and pepper shakers have excellent transparency, gloss, good toughness, processability and excellent colorability.
03、Market pattern of PETG
Imported products occupy the vast majority of the market: in 2020, China's PETG foreign dependence is as high as 85% or more, the main source of imports is the U.S. Eastman Chemical Company and South Korea SK Chemical Company. The U.S. Eastman Company is the earliest company to realize PETG production, with two series of PETG products, Eastar and Spectar, with more than 60 product grades; South Korea's SK Company realized the industrialized production of PETG in 2001, successfully breaking the monopoly of the U.S. Eastman Company, SK currently has Sky Green PETG S2008, Sky SK currently has Sky Green PETG S2008, Sky Green PETGK2012 and Sky Green KN100 and other grades.
Domestic enterprises gradually break through the technological blockade: China PETG in recent years to break through the foreign technological blockade, the new Liaoyang Petrochemical 100,000 tons/year device and Huahong Chemical Fiber 35,000 tons/year device in 2017, and the new Jiangsu Ilman 1.0 million tons/year device in 2018. 2020, China has a total of four PETG producers, namely, Liaoyang Petrochemical, Huahong Chemical Fiber, Jiangsu Ilman and Jiangsu Jinghong, with a combined capacity of 15.0 million tons/year. With the rapid increase in production capacity in sharp contrast to the domestic PETG production is low, in 2020 less than 3.0 million tons. Restricted by technical barriers, only Liaoyang Petrochemical, Keling Chemical (Zhangjiagang) Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Kangheng Chemical Co., Ltd. and a few other enterprises can produce PETG raw material CHDM, and some of the devices due to technical problems in the production of instability, raw material reliance on imports resulting in high costs, which limits the domestic production of PETG. At the same time, China PETG localization is still in the early stage, the current domestic product quality and imported products there is still a gap, the market recognition is low.
04、PETG development prospects
PETG can be processed into heat-shrinkable film and various injection-molded products, which are widely used in food packaging, cosmetic packaging, medical packaging and other fields, and the average annual growth rate of consumption from 2016 to 2020 is more than 10%.PETG, as an environmentally friendly material, complies with the FDA food-contact standards, and is non-toxic and harmless to the human body and the natural environment, and does not produce an unpleasant odor when it is heat-processed, and incineration does not release It does not produce unpleasant odor during thermal processing, does not release toxic gas during incineration, and does not pollute underground water sources after landfill disposal.
With the upgrading of Chinese residents' consumption, the concern for health, environmental protection and high-quality products will continue to increase, which is conducive to the development of PETG in the field of food packaging, cosmetic packaging and medicine and hygiene, especially the traditional PVC heat shrinkable film in the environmental factors will be significantly inhibited, PETG heat shrinkable film has more room for growth. Some companies try to use NPG (Neopentyl Glycol) instead of part of CHDM to prepare PETG to reduce costs, applied to the field of heat shrink packaging film. It is expected that in the future, with the continuous maturity of PETG technology, as well as the continuous progress of raw material CHDM localization, the situation that most of China's PETG relies on imports will be improved.
